Derrick White will not pursue NBA free agency in the summer of 2025. The veteran guard is staying with the Boston Celtics.
ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski announced Monday that White and the Celtics had reached an agreement on a four-year, $125.9 million deal extension. The contract contains a player option, according to Wojnarowski. Because White still has one year on his present contract, the agreement will take effect in 2025-26.
Trade and Impact
The Celtics acquired White from the San Antonio Spurs prior to the NBA trade deadline in 2022. The Celtics traded Romeo Langford, Josh Richardson, a 2022 first-round selection, and a 2028 first-round pick (top one protected). White has been a fan favorite in Boston since he came, thanks to his great two-way play and effort.
Excellent Performance
Throughout the 2023-24 regular season, White averaged 15.2 points, 4.1 assists, 3.5 rebounds, 0.9 blocks, and 0.8 steals per game. He also shot 46.1% from the field and a career-best 39.6% from three. His defense was outstanding throughout the season, and his efforts were rewarded with a spot on the league's All-Defensive second team for the second straight year.
The 29-year-old guard was also impressive in the playoffs, averaging 16.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game while shooting 40.4 percent from outside the arc. White scored 15 or more points in 12 of the team's 19 playoff games, en route to winning the NBA Finals over the Dallas Mavericks.
